Is A Literary Consultant Worth It?

Stack of Books

First, what is a Literary Consultant?

By definition, a Literary Consultant is an individual who makes sure your manuscript is put together properly, and doing so against a number of factors. It can be anything from the tone of the book in contrast to the content itself, editing, and giving general feedback about what market the book belongs to (if any at all), helping define your target demographic (or what publishers to go with when submitting your manuscript).

Though it may seem that an author is well-rounded enough to proof their own work, you would be surprised how many traditional publishers reject a manuscript within the first several pages simply because they did not meet the formatting requirements. Other times they may read the cover letter, determine from its composition that the manuscript has no market, and essentially throw your hard work into a shredder!

The Truth Is…

The truth is, about 90% of authors do not have an especially well-rounded viewpoint on what a book truly is, and that is where a Literary Consultant comes into the picture. A book may be art while it is being written, but once the manuscript is done, it becomes a product. To continue to view it as art only deters your chances at success. As a Literary Consultant, I have come across many individuals who are great authors, but lack the business expertise it takes to get that book sold.

A lot of authors self-publish. This is an area where things can get tricky. When trying to sell your own book without the proper resources, you are tilling the grounds for failure. Wouldn’t you rather till ground for success? It is best to be knowledgeable in how to set up the proper formatting for your novel in the event that you require self-publishing services. We offer those on our Services page.
